It's about Family

A great story to come out of the Winnipeg Rifles Hockey season in 2007-08 was the latest addition to our lineup. The first ever Father and Son combination.
The team was a fortunate witness to #10 Allan Sylvester and his son 15 year old #72 Ryan suit up for a game together on Oct 18, 2007 in a 2-2 tie vs Brahma Bulls.
Ryan has gone on to play a total of 14 games, contributing 3 goals and 2 assists and 0 penalty minutes. He fit right in while skating on defence and as a forward.
It hard to imagine that when I met Al way back in 1980, that we would be still doing what we love and to boot now, the next generation makes it's presence felt.

Catching up

Just like the title implies it's time to get caught up (a bad habit of mine)and for starters the Dynamo 2007-08 season was one for the ages, or at least for the Manager.

After a satisfying campaign in the 2006-07 season and glowing from the fact that so many new players gave the club a huge boost we were once again shopping around for players to fill the roster, and as I will explain for this coming season (2008-09) it does not get any easier.

As I have told our newest additions Jeremy and Chris, I welcome them to our club even if only for the one season. We all appreciated their contributions.

For sure as a Manager and a player for Dynamo I have to thank you Skip from bringing on one hell of a classy individual and amazing player in one # 66 Chris Nielsen.
Not only for the fact that he led our team with 60 points in only 20 games, and we all knew that he would do that, but that someone that has played at the highest level of hockey in the NHL, made the season a special one for all those around him. It's the first time someone has donned a Dynamo sweater that has played at that level and it's hard to say if that will ever happen again.

One can be over whelmed to see up close how good a player can be or have to be to get to the best level of hockey, but the kind of individual that Chris is, made that part an easy thing for all to see and how a great player can make everyone around him better, and of course to play a team game.

I personally want to thank Chris for adding his name to a list of past and current Dynamo and Rifles players that have been leaders, extra ordinary, and down right good people. A proud friend.

The 2006/07 Team Awards

Before we talk about this past seasons awards, I wanted to touch on a little bit of history of both teams with this aspect in mind. I will also be commencing an awards page (very soon) and other interesting info. It will make it a great and fun thing to share with each and every member that has ever put on a jersey for either team.

As we have done from the start of the Rifles and Dynamo existence, some sort of award was always issued, there were a few season where it did not happen, but those were rare and far between. I am happy to say that we have kept track of every player that has come through the doors and all their stats. Everyone gets a kick out of that, and a good laugh as well.

I have always believed that players should be recognized for their contributions, and more importantly that their peers show them the respect they deserve.

You cannot forget other contributions (that might not show up as a stat) such as a series winning pass or play, someone who works so hard each and every game, like it was their last. The individual that puts everyone else ahead of themselves, and is willing to do what ever it takes.

We don't get paid to go out and play, just the opposite. I would love to figure out, the amount money that people have paid, just to get out to have some fun, exercise, and really when you get down to it, some good competition. When you do finally win a League Championship or accomplish a goal as group, and you look back at all the other committments everyone has to make in their everyday life, family, jobs, careers, it feels mighty good, to share and bask in that fleeting glory (even for a minute).

So here to each and every member of our organization past and present, I want to thank you for allowing me an opportunity to share in that experience.

John

Season update and Playoffs

The season started off with lot's of promise, both teams added some great players, they all made their present felt and definitely left their mark through-out the year.

The Rifles were lead by their Rookie MVP goalie Scott Sangster right to game five of the finals, where in a tight series the Wpg Devils edged us out, by scoring with six seconds on the clock. The addition of another Rookie Scott "Happy" Gilmore (sorry Scott I could not help myself) who went on to win the team scoring title, made Kevin Sawa look like a genius. I was certainly proud of everyones efforts and contributions during the season, and faced with one heck of a challenge from the Steelers in the second round, it made us that much better heading into the final.

Dynamo were pleasantly surprised by the additions of no fewer than six players. Lead by Rookie Brian Brook who won the team scoring trophy. With the likes of Aaron "Skip" Bolduc, Rob Gowryluk, (both back after actually lacing up the blades with the Rifles, so many years ago) to make a real great contribution. The improving game from another Rookie Ben Lawson and solid contributions from the Rookie brothers Justin & Jamie Morris the team fortunes were looking mighty fine. Here the team made it to the second round, and it had to do with some hard work vs the Spiders. We unfortunally could not complete the mission as the Ice Dawgs with a killer game one, made the rest of the series a real challenge and we really did not come back from that. Considering the discussions I had with a few guys at the start of the season, on how things were shaping up, I have to say that this year, was probably one of the most fun and fulfilling years we have had in a long time. A special thanks goes out to the rest of the team, and making all our new guys feel welcome. Bring on 2007/08.

Baron's Tournament Grand Forks March 23-25, 07

Dynamo/Rifles first trip ever into the USA as a Hockey team was a good one. With the support of a recent American citizen, Kyle "Love those Bombers" Kosior (From somewhere in Saskatchewan) and his Law student acquisitions, gave the team a decent chance. A 2 wins and 2 loss record, would have vaulted us in a shot at a championship any where else, but in this tournament it turned out to be just bad timing and Dynamo could only go home feeling good about a .500 record. The organization has already prepared to take another run at this next year, and are hoping to be able to get committment from a few more regulars. Of course we are also very prepared to have our new additions, once again to bolster the lineup.

Team picture Front Row: Joel "Speedy" Ritchie, Grant Harrison (Calgary Alberta), Dante Tomassoni (Div 3 college), John Casarin.
Middle Row: Chris "Damn Job" Dueck, Allan "Kitty" Sylvester, Alberto "Bourque" Guercio, David Piper (Div 3 college).
Back Row: Kyle "Love those Bombers really" Kosior, Mike "Mess" Cleland, Brent "I miss James" Boudreau, Russ "bruised foot" Hodgson.
MIA: Jeremy "4 game tourney" Noel, Conrad "what game?" Beck, Derek Rosso.
